3 Tips To Save Money On Towing

Automotive Blog

Towing is an essential service, but you might worry that it costs more than you can afford. Luckily, there are a few ways that you can save money on towing. Follow these three tips, and you're sure to find that hiring a towing company is much more affordable than you previously thought. This can help take some off the pressure off of you during an otherwise stressful situation, such as when your car is malfunctioning or you've been in an accident.

1. Find Any Free Options

First of all, you should know that you might qualify for free towing in some way without even realizing it. For example, your car insurance policy might cover towing. Some cell phone plans include roadside assistance that you can use up to a certain number of times per year, and some vehicle warranties also include these services. Obviously, you will also often be able to score free or reduced-price towing if you are a member of a roadside assistance club. Check out all of these options first before you shell out the cash for towing.

2. Call the Closest Towing Company That You Can

The company that you call really does matter. Some towing companies charge by the mile, so make sure that you call the closest towing company to you. Your GPS or smartphone should be able to give you information about the closest towing company to your location. Also, keep in mind how far each towing company will have to travel to the place you're taking your car, such as your house or a local mechanic's shop.

3. Provide as Many Details as Possible

When talking to someone from the towing company, make sure that you provide as many details as possible. For example, you may be able to have your car repaired rather than towed if you need something simple done, such as if you need someone to bring you gas or if you need your tire to be changed. If you tell your towing provider the problem ahead of time, he or she can come prepared to provide you with one of these services, which can save you money.

Also, if your towing provider comes properly prepared to tow your car -- such as if your car needs a certain type of tow because of any modifications that you have made -- you will not have to worry about paying extra because the tow truck driver has to make a special trip back to the shop.

About Greg Chapman

When I was little, I'd watch old movies with my grandfather. One of my favorite scenes was when Steve McQueen tried to jump that big fence on his motorcycle in "The Great Escape." After I saw that, I just wanted a motorcycle. I was obsessed with them! My grandpa knew that, and he helped me build one for myself. He took me shopping for all the parts, taught me about the mechanics of it all, and walked me through all the building and repairs. Since then, my love has expanded to all things that run with a motor, including cars. Even though I'm not a professional, I'm quite skilled, and that has proven handy when it comes to my own repairs and the simple enjoyment of riding my bikes. Check out my blog!
