Four Problems You Want To Be Sure Not To Overlook When Buying A Used Semi Truck

Automotive Blog

If you need to have a new truck for your business, and are planning on buying used, there are some things that you will want to look for. You may want to do a basic inspection and hear the truck run, but there are also things that you do not want to overlook, such as the condition of the brakes and transmission. Here are some things that you will want to be sure to not overlook when you are looking for a new truck:

1. Getting A Truck With The Right Amount Of Power

You may want to have a truck with a certain amount of power. This can make a big difference on performance. Too much horse power, and you will just waste fuel; too little horse power and you can have trouble with repairs. If you just need to haul light equipment, consider a truck that is a little smaller for your needs. For delivering heavy loads, you may want to have an engine and transmission that is meant to pull loads.

2. Checking The Transmission And Differential For Potential Problems

With semi trucks, the transmission and rear differential are just as important as the motor. When a truck has a lot of miles on it, this can affect the performance. It is essential that you get to see the truck drive and check the fluid levels in the transmission. Doing this will ensure that you do not overlook major problems with the drivetrain of a used truck.

3. Knowing The Mileage And Type Of Driving A Tuck Has Done

Mileage is also an important factor to consider when buying a used truck. The type of driving a truck does can also affect the miles. For example, a truck with a lot of miles of in-town deliveries will have a lot more wear from the stop-and-go traffic. A truck with hundreds-of-thousands of cross country miles will have a lot less wear and be a better deal.

4. Ask For All The Maintenance Records, Including Repairs That Have Been Done

When you buy a used truck, ask for all the maintenance and repair records. You will want documents for things like differential replacements and other major mechanical records. You may also want to ask if there is a log of the previous owner, which can tell you the type of driving and loads that a used truck has done.

These are some tips to help you look over some of the things that you may have forgotten about when buying a used truck. If you are looking for a used truck, contact a dealership such as Arrow Truck Sales to get exactly what you are looking for.

About Greg Chapman

When I was little, I'd watch old movies with my grandfather. One of my favorite scenes was when Steve McQueen tried to jump that big fence on his motorcycle in "The Great Escape." After I saw that, I just wanted a motorcycle. I was obsessed with them! My grandpa knew that, and he helped me build one for myself. He took me shopping for all the parts, taught me about the mechanics of it all, and walked me through all the building and repairs. Since then, my love has expanded to all things that run with a motor, including cars. Even though I'm not a professional, I'm quite skilled, and that has proven handy when it comes to my own repairs and the simple enjoyment of riding my bikes. Check out my blog!
